Max Majernik’s Thoughts on “Prospects”
Hi everyone! Maxwell Majernik, creator and writer of Prospects, here!
First off, I wanted to thank everyone for a successful opening week on Kickstarter! As of this article going up, we are over 1K and 50 backers. A great start, but we are going to need a catalyst as we start to approach the dreaded ‘middle lull.’
Hearing about Prospects for the first time? Here’s the down and dirty pitch below.
The town of Ridgeville has been stuck in the middle of a 150 year old war between two mad scientists, and the Prospect of immortality. The fate of the town falls onto one man, a 30 year old slacker named Colin, who must save the town and rid it of both scientists once and for all.
Prospects is a mix of 50’s sci-fi, 80’s horror, and everyday life.
Prospects puts a lens to our current culture with humor. We wanted to explore this rise of hyper-aggressive parasocial relationships that have come about with social media providing a window into strangers and celebrities lives like we have never had before. This town has never interacted with the scientists, but they feel connected to them in a surreal way. It’s what happens when Stan culture is turned up to 11.
Fate is a key theme in Prospects. Are we, or our surroundings, in control of our destiny. Colin is one of the main characters and feels as if his destiny has passed him by and his window is closed. Andrew is on the other side of the spectrum and is one of the most highly touted recruits for the cyborg/zombie war. His fate seems etched in stone – except for the fact that he wants out. How these two characters interact with the town and the rest of the cast of Prospects is one of the highlights of the series.
Jean Franco is the entire art department. His lines are clean, his colors pop, his monster designs are familiar, yet fresh. All in all, I couldn’t have asked for a better artist to work on Prospects with me. I only hope we will get to continue the series and show everyone more of the outrageous designs that have been brewing inside his brain for years!
Why Band of Bards? We’ll, because I believe in them. I was drawn to their initial rollout of #ComicsDoingGood. Chris and Tim are working extremely hard to create a different kind of publisher. They don’t want our relationship to be transactional, but something bigger and better. I’ve had the privilege of hearing their five-year plan and, I gotta tell ya, it’s something I am excited to be on the ground floor of.
I hope you enjoyed a brief glimpse into the world of Prospects! There is still plenty of time to pledge and get us fully funded.
